Neurokinetic Therapy in Sacramento
Neurokinetic Therapy
Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) is a form of sophisticated manual therapy that taps into an individual's nervous system to find the root cause of their pain. Specifically, NKT assesses which muscles are strong, weak, and ultimately related to each other through manual muscle testing and motor control theory.
The science of motor control theory states that the motor control center in the cerebellum (brain) stores: muscle movement, coordination patterns, posture maintenance, and body balance. Manual muscle testing is used to “access” the cerebellum to assess specific muscle status.
When we experience muscle imbalances due to lifestyle factors or injuries, substitute neuromuscular formations develop in the brain that result in muscle compensation patterns. Manual muscle testing allows us to find those muscles that are weak and strong and work together in a dysfunctional relationship. Thus, NKT looks at the whole body as a system.
NKT seeks to bring balance to the body by reversing these compensation/dysfunctional patterns and restoring natural movement.
Examples: Lifestyle Muscle Imbalances
Forward Head Posture
Aging and Technology Usage can lead to forward head posture. This tightens the back of the neck and chest muscles and weakens the front of the neck and middle back muscles. This leads to a stiff upper back and forward shoulders. Ultimately, we can experience “winged” shoulder blades and limited lung capacity through compressed ribs.
Hip Imbalance and Lower Back Pain
Sitting incorrectly can have a profound impact on our posture over time. Hips become rotated or hiked resulting in an imbalance. The abdominals become weak with the lower back compressed that could lead to pain. The front muscles of the hip tighten and the glutes become weak. Under these conditions, we can lose functional walking mechanics.
